The Kershaw Story

Pete Kershaw founded the company in 1974 after leaving Gerber Legendary Blades, operating his first office out of a cement plant in Lake Oswego, Oregon. He sold his early hunting knives directly from the trunk of his car, visiting hardware stores and sporting goods shops one by one across the Pacific Northwest.

Manufacturing was partnered early to Kai Cutlery of Japan, where master bladesmith Ichiro Hattori produced Kershaw’s debut fixed-blade models. By 1985, Kai Group had fully acquired the company, forming Kai USA and injecting the capital needed to pursue serious technological development in Wilsonville, Oregon.

The brand’s defining breakthrough arrived in 1998, when designer Ken Onion’s SpeedSafe® assisted-opening mechanism debuted and immediately reshaped the folding-knife industry. The Leek, Blur, and Chive followed, cementing Kershaw as the benchmark for performance-per-dollar in the EDC and sporting knife market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Real answers to the questions knife enthusiasts ask most about Kershaw — from steel selection to assisted-opening legality.

Does Kershaw offer a warranty on its knives?

Kershaw backs every knife with a Limited Lifetime Warranty against manufacturing defects for the original owner. The company will also sharpen any Kershaw blade for free when it’s sent in for warranty service.

Where are Kershaw knives manufactured?

Many Kershaw models are made in-house at a 55,000 sq. ft. production facility in Tualatin, Oregon. Select models are also manufactured through Kai Group’s facilities in Japan and China, depending on the line.

SpeedSafe® is Kershaw’s patented assisted-opening mechanism. Because it requires manual pressure to begin the opening stroke — unlike a true switchblade — it is legal to carry in most U.S. states, though local laws vary and should always be checked.

What blade steel do most Kershaw knives use?

The majority of Kershaw’s popular EDC folders use Sandvik 14C28N stainless steel, valued for its strong edge retention, corrosion resistance, and easy sharpening. Higher-end models step up to CPM S30V or MagnaCut.

What is the difference between the Leek and the Blur?

The Leek is slimmer and lighter at 3 oz, ideal for low-profile daily carry. The Blur is larger and heavier at 3.9 oz, offering more grip and blade belly for tougher cutting tasks. Both feature SpeedSafe® assisted opening.

Can I replace a broken blade on my Kershaw folder?

Yes. Kershaw’s warranty team offers accidental blade replacement for folding knives for a nominal service fee. Contact Kai USA’s warranty department directly for current pricing and instructions.

What Kershaw Owners Are Saying

Thousands of carry enthusiasts, tradespeople, and outdoor users have made Kershaw their everyday companion — here is what a few of them have to say.

Handsome man hand in hair

Carried my Blur daily for three years now. The SpeedSafe action is still snappy, the aluminum scales have aged beautifully, and the edge barely needs attention. Best $60 I’ve spent.

The Leek disappears in your pocket – I forget it’s there until I need it. Sandvik steel takes a wicked edge and sharpens in minutes. My go-to gentleman’s folder, full stop.

Bought the Skyline for hiking trips and it’s never let me down. Light, grippy, and the drop-point blade handles everything from food prep to cordage. Kershaw just makes solid knives.
